USD - Founders Chapel
A unified audio, control, and 4K livestreaming system designed to enhance worship while preserving the beauty and character of USD’s historic Founders Chapel.

The challenge
Often described by USD as the university’s “hidden jewel,” Founders Chapel is both an architecturally significant sacred space and a center of liturgical life for the campus community. Its technology, however, had evolved as a collection of disconnected systems rather than as a unified whole. Aging and repurposed wiring, combined with poorly positioned loudspeakers, produced inconsistent coverage while visually detracting from the chapel’s historic interior. Audio control and digital signal processing were divided between separate systems, and the choir relied on an isolated digital mixer that had to be brought into the sanctuary and configured for every Mass. Livestreaming was similarly cumbersome, requiring a tethered computer and providing limited freedom to switch between camera views during a broadcast. The result was a system that demanded considerable setup and technical intervention while falling short of the chapel’s architectural, liturgical, and operational needs. USD describes liturgy as being at the heart of its faith community and Founders Chapel as one of its signature spaces.
The Solution
DTS designed a unified system that brought audio control, digital signal processing, and every chapel input together within one cohesive, intuitive platform. Two custom-built choir input panels now accommodate the full range of instruments and microphones without requiring a separate mixer to be set up in the sanctuary for each Mass. Two dedicated touchscreen interfaces provide simple control of the entire system, including one installed on a custom-fabricated mount designed to complement the chapel’s existing pipe organ. For livestreaming, three new 4K PTZ cameras were integrated with a broadcast video switcher and professional video encoder, allowing finished streams to appear directly on a dedicated webpage for online viewers. An additional iPad interface gives a camera operator more detailed control and the freedom to compose and switch camera views during a broadcast when desired. The result is a powerful yet approachable system that supports the chapel’s liturgies while respecting the beauty and character of the space.
