St. Joseph Cathedral
A thoughtfully engineered sound system that improved clarity, wireless reliability, and liturgical coverage while respecting the historic beauty of St. Joseph Cathedral.

The challenge
St. Joseph Cathedral’s aging sound system no longer supported the demands of its liturgies or the architectural significance of the space. Antiquated tower loudspeakers had been installed using improvised bolts and mounting hardware, creating both safety and aesthetic concerns. Loudspeakers positioned at the front, middle, and rear of the nave operated without proper time alignment or system tuning, resulting in inconsistent and unfocused coverage. Wireless microphone antennas were mounted directly to receivers inside a metal equipment rack, severely limiting reception and causing dropouts during processions and special liturgies extending into the vestibule or outside the main worship space, including the reception of the body at funerals and the Paschal fire at Easter. The choir loft had no dedicated loudspeaker coverage, leaving musicians to follow the liturgy through muffled reflections from the nave below. Any replacement system also had to preserve the cathedral’s historic interior despite extremely limited pathways for new cabling.
The Solution
DTS designed a discreet, properly engineered system that addressed coverage, intelligibility, wireless reliability, and safety without competing with the cathedral’s architecture. The aging loudspeakers and improvised mounting hardware were replaced with securely installed loudspeakers arranged, processed, time-aligned, and individually tuned to provide consistent coverage throughout the nave. Dedicated loudspeakers were added to the choir loft, allowing musicians to hear and follow the liturgy clearly for the first time. Wireless microphone antennas were remotely positioned within the worship space to provide dependable coverage throughout the cathedral, vestibule, and other areas used during processions and special liturgies. New cabling and equipment were carefully integrated around the limitations of the historic structure, resulting in a modern, cohesive system that remains visually subordinate to the beauty of the cathedral.
